A very valid question and a tricky one too.

I wonder that about my brothers vast collection of work, which is 100percent negatives and prints. Definitely not his kids. They will probably hire a cleanup company and pitch everything.

So, in a way, putting all your stuff on a thumb drive seems a not awful thing.
