Collapsed tree: Lilacs benefit from hard pruning after they have flowered. Failure to remove older stems can result in older branches giving way. Once your bush is done blooming, carefully go through the bush and test, by wiggling, older stems. Weak stems will wiggle easily and some may even come out of the bush when pulled. Cut out older, weaker stems and branches, and your bush will be rejuvenated.
