Curse of the Round Shoelaces

Recently I was pleased to learn that I am not the only one that has issues with shoelaces.

My garden assistant, Nerissa, was cursing last Sunday because her laces refused to remain done up. Even if one double ties them, they still creep apart and pretty soon, when you least expect it, the laces are undone.

It doesn’t seem to matter whether it is work boots, hiking boots, running shoes or dress shoes — if they have laces, they will usually have those fat, round ones, seen in the photo below.

And it is those fat, round ones that are the worst offenders.

What happened to the shoelaces of our youth? Those flat ones. Sure they came untied, but not with the regularity of these new ones.

Some work boots sport leather laces. They are the very worst for coming undone, and they wear and break easily.

Because if you do not regularly apply Dubbin or some other leather softener, they dry out. Once they dry out they become brittle and break.

By the way, I am not pleased with the wimpy pink laces and trim on my shoes. Believe it or not, they are steel toe safety shoes.
