Dennett, I totally support using moral guidelines to determine where one shops.
I refuse to shop at any of the big box stores because they steal away business from small family businesses, and are horrible to their employees. (They may also be Trump style supporters for all I know.)
Now that usually ends up costing me more but I feel it is a fair tax to pay to ensure that I support small, family run places plus boycotting the big ones makes me very happy.
Sometimes the big stores appear to be charging less — they will show a couple of “loss leader” items, but on the whole their average prices are not much less than the smaller places.
Also, while they seem to have large amounts of product which ought to ensure more choice, I find that in plant material — our big stores at any rate -carry large amounts of boring stuff, but none of the more interesting types that one might like.
