Good to be tough and stand up, but not because of being beaten. That sucks.

I just heard of another child, in the 40s, sent to live with his merchant relative, because his parents had too many kids and couldn't afford to feed them. The merchant relative kept him (along with a dozen or so other small kids) in the attic and had them do slave labour in his barrell making company. That certainly gave them all a will to survive. Sounds like something Dickens would have told. Actually happened.
