I think that when they have people take their pets to training school, there should be special training for owners.

We have a special doggy washroom area in our garden where we always took our dogs, and when the appropriate outcome happened, praise and often a treat was given. It was amazing how well that worked. (I am a custom landscape designer and do not allow random bathroom acitvities on my plants, so a special area had to be set up and made inviting for the pooches.)
