Hilarious, and sad too, Heather. I can relate, in a weird way.

We adopted our cat, Taffy in 2011. After hiding in the basement for several months, she was brought upstairs and lived in my husbands' office. She bade that her base and was his cat. She tolerated but did not encourage pats from me. This continued until just recently, September 2022. Then, she began visiting us while we watched movies (a first), and then, she decided to come and stretch out on my legs. She does this every night now. Stretches out full length on me, settles in while we watch our movie. Every so often, she gets up and goes over to greet my husband briefly, makes like she is going to lie on him, then returns to me. I keep telling her, I am NOT her big cat. She however, doesn't care. I have to clarify that Taffy is not a lap cat - this is the only time she does laps. Go figure.
