I think people should be free to say if kids are welcome or not, and I think that guests should understand. If the hosts are not comfortable having kids at the event, why should they include them?

Maybe that friendship is no longer viable. People change.

I would say don’t accept the invite if you are not able to find arrangements for the kids. And reconsider that friendship. Forget about a gift for them.
