Having spent my childhood years in Portugal, which happened to be during the Salazar years, I know that what you are saying is true.
However, even though Canada is a so-called democratic society, with a fairly appointed government, still we too suffer from corrupt and self serving governments on all levels. Almost all our top politicians are from upper and upper middle class families. Almost all have university educations and come from “good hoods”, with money behind. Few, if any really get poverty. Most, once they get some power begin to play the game with rich corporations who unabashedly fund them.
In Portugal I was treated with scorn because we were not rich. In Canada, better off kids get better treatment than poorer ones.
I believe that the pecking order exists in most societies, it just expresses itself in slightly different ways.
