It is probably good to try the meditation route. I have never had any luck with it, but am easily distracted, so that is not surprising.
You may want to look into accupressure points based on TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) there are some great accupressure points for treating yourself for things like anxiety, stress,, etc. even pain.
If nothing else, concentrating on applying these points should distract you a bit.
I have had oustanding success with accupressure points in controlling asthma attacks.
