Perhaps not in the same way we do, but they can be pretty clever at figuring things out and coming up with plans/strategies.

Getting on board with their facial expressions and the body positions, the tail action and the ears, and eyes all very important to understanding their moods and wishes.

I wish we had always understood the many signals they give, but it is only now after 8 cats that we are really becoming good at "getting" them.
