Susan, I totally hear you.
I am going to suggest something really wild. TCM Traditional chinese Medicine. Acupuncture or even just acupressure. Google it. Google acupressure points for the specific pain area. You will be able to do these yourself - anytime. It works. You may find your acupressure point is on you hand, or your foot, it will not be in your back and therefore hard to reach. Try it. It is working for me and I REALLY hate taking pills. (I have pain 24/7)
