Terrible things happen to pets all over the world, even right here in North America. This a huge problem that needs more very vocal advocates.

I am happy when people draw attention to some of these situations. Some cultures disregard animals as sentient beings, and therein lies a big obstacle. The phrase “it’s only an animal”, was one that I heard frequently in Portugal, where I grew up. This phrase was used to justify neglect and abuse. As long as countries with this attitude are not chastised and criticized, this abhorrent attitude will continue.
