I believe that he had a pretty decent life with his first family. Whenever an older gentleman visited us, Gandalf would go immediately to him, sit beside him and purr. We think that he was the much loved companion to an elder. We do know that the person that had him was put in a nursing home. It greatly annoyed me that the family did not take him in, but if they had, we would not have the honour of him being with us for 9 years.
