Dividing them every 3–4 years is an excellent strategy. The reason the rhizomes pop out is basically they have used up all the nutrients and want more space and more nutrients, so in their own way they are saying “split us up”.

An alternate that requires less maintenance is Japanese and Siberian Iris. the flowers are smaller but some varieties ar really beautiful. Not sure if the deer like them…
