Tough call. I hate to see an animal suffering, and some times rescue simply is not an option. A quick and merciful end is sometims the kindest option. I have had to do this a couple of times myself. Not pleasant.

We have had multiple cats and dogs that we had to send over the Rainbow Bridge, but fortunately our vet was the executioner in those cases. My heart still breaks, and yet I know it was the kindest option.
